As a toddler in the 1970s, I remember really clearly finding my big sister's pink glossy lipstick and that feeling of drawing with it on her embossed bedroom wallpaper.
I grew up an Italian in England. Back then, our community was mostly Italian too, and our social life consisted of family get togethers, Italian dances and food. Dad had an allotment and grew everything from artichokes to zucchini. In early Autumn of each year, a small truck delivery of grapes would pull up outside our house and drop off a few cratefuls so that dad could make his very own red wine in our garage. The aroma of that grape juice slowly evolving into wine was amazing.
When the summer holidays arrived, we would usually go to the Sicilian village where my parents grew up and spend them with the extended family - cugini, zii e nonni. We'd return to England with olive oil, wine and cheeses, ready for the start of school.
Most of the architecture and objects
that I draw are quite ordinary things
that move us or stir a memory...and they take centre stage in my intricate portraits of them
I studied Architectural Design at university and then worked in Oxford, UK for the years that followed, continuing to draw and paint. After post graduate studies in Art a few years later, I taught Art and Design and worked as an artist on private commissions.
Since 2008, I have been working in Barcelona as an artist, creating still life and architectural portraits.
I'm a little obsessed with intricate details...
...and like to create a sense of visual intimacy with my subjects. I do this by using close-up framing where the focus is mainly on that subject, with little or no background. By doing this, those everyday objects and places, whether it is someone's home or a telephone, take centre stage in my intricate portraits of them.
Time travelling stitches...
I love vintage eras. Each decade has its own distinct aesthetic and flavour which are celebrated in the pieces I create.
I'm an artist based in Barcelona, Spain. Most of my art has a connection to our everyday experiences.
The portraits I create of objects are often favourite everyday things, or they re-connect us to memories and evoke feelings of nostalgia. Sometimes they're inspired by vintage eras.
My architectural portraits illustrate places that are, or have been part of our lives - childhood family homes, wedding venues, favourite shops and cafes and even where we work.
In Barcelona, there is a rich heritage of Art Nouveau architecture, including everyday shops such as bakeries and pharmacies. These are a constant source of inspiration for me too.
I use inks and machine embroidered stitch, often incorporating layers of fabric, fibres and pigment.
